KTON Withdrawals and Validator Penalties: Q&A

A validator penalty is covered first by the validator's own funds held with its KTON loan, so it reaches KTON holders only if a validator cannot repay in full, and then it is shared by everyone through the exchange rate. Unstakes are paid out right away for 0.2% when the pool has enough unlent Gram; otherwise Gram returns after the current round, up to about 36 hours.

Questions and answers

Who pays if a KTON validator is penalized?

A validator borrows Gram from the KTON pool for one round and must repay the loan plus a fixed interest when the round ends. The repayment comes from everything the validator holds with the loan, including its own funds, so a penalty is paid from the validator's side first. Only if a validator could not repay in full would the shortfall reach the pool.

What would happen to KTON holders if a loan were not repaid in full?

The loss would be shared by all KTON holders in proportion to their holdings, through a lower KTON exchange rate. Checked on 18 October 2026, the public KTON pool had repaid 373 validator loans and none was repaid below its principal.

What is the NFT receipt I get when I unstake?

If your withdrawal is not paid out right away, the protocol issues an NFT receipt that records your share of the round's withdrawals. When the round finalizes, the receipt is burnt automatically and your Gram is sent to whoever holds it at that moment, so do not transfer or sell it.

When is an unstake paid out right away?

If the KTON pool holds enough Gram that is not lent to validators, your unstake is paid out right away for a fee of 0.2% (a governance setting). The pool lends almost all of its Gram to validators, so this suits smaller amounts; otherwise your Gram is returned after the current validation round finalizes, up to about 36 hours. In the KTON app this is the Withdraw now option. The payout uses the current exchange rate, so it does not include the profit of the round in progress.

What happens if the pool cannot pay my withdrawal?

If the pool cannot accept a withdrawal, the KTON you returned is minted back to your wallet in full, so nothing is lost and you can submit it again later. You only pay the network gas for the attempt.

Is there a fee to unstake?

There is no deposit fee, and a standard withdrawal costs nothing beyond network gas. An unstake paid out right away costs 0.2% of the amount. The 16% governance fee applies to staking rewards only, not to your principal.
